In a recent update to the TP-Link Archer AX3000 Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Router, TP-Link have introduced official Ethernet Backhaul for their Mesh system.
I have an Archer AX53 v1.0 and up until recently, in order to get Ethernet Backhaul working for the Easy Mesh system, I’ve had to use a beta firmware (1.2.4 Build 20240206 rel.41393(4555)).
Ethernet Backhaul allows Mesh Devices to not only connect using Wifi but also if you have the ability to link them using CAT5 or CAT6 Ethernet, it will decide which is the fastest and most appropriate way of connectivity (often the Ethernet).
The new firmware (1.4.3 Build 20250314 rel.78903) introduces the following features:
- Added Ethernet Backhaul for EasyMesh
- Added EasyMesh feature in AP mode.
- Added support for ECO mode.
- Added support for VPN Client.
- Added support for WireGuard.
- Added new functions to the Tether App: EasyMesh, OpenVPN Server/Client, Eco Mode, Wireless Schedule, Guest Portal Network.
- Optimized Parental Control function.
- Optimized the overall system stability and performance.
- Enhanced the security of the device.
- Fixed some issues related to EasyMesh.
Updating the firmware on any device comes with a risk that you may damage it beyond repair. DO NOT PROCEED if you are uncomfortable with this.
To update to the latest firmware, open up the Router in your browser and once logged on click on Advanced

Once in the Advanced menu, on the lower left of the screen click System > Firmware Upgrade

If you haven’t already got Auto Update enabled (I had it disabled due to running a Beta Firmware), either enable it or click Check for Updates

Let the router restart and then log back on. You should now be able to configure your EasyMesh and take advantage of wired connections between devices where possible.

The actual configuration of EasyMesh is beyond the scope of this article. If you’re interested in learning how to do this, let me know and I’ll put something together.
Hopefully this has been useful, if you have any questions or feedback – please leave them in the comments below.
